Let’s Take a Walk
How would you like to take a walk in the Spirit every day? Does it sound like something you couldn’t achieve or is it something you think you would like to work towards?
Well, let me assure you, it is very possible to walk in the Spirit daily. Paul tells us in Galatians 5:16…”So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.“
The word “walk” is the Greek word “peripateo”. It appears in the New Testament 95 times and has a very clear meaning. It is the compound of the words “peri” and “pateo”.
Peri means around and suggests the idea of encircling.
The word pateo means to walk. It denotes the movement of the feet. It also means to stride, to step, to tread.
When these two words are put together into one word, it means to habitually walk around in one general vicinity.
This is a great example of what Galatians 5:16 is saying! It suggests a person who has walked in one region for so long that it has now become his environment, or his place of daily activity. It pictures a person who has walked one path so habitually that he would be able to walk that path blindfolded.
My daughter has a Bassett Hound named Bella and she is blind in both eyes. But over time, Bella as acquainted herself with her environment to the point she walks through the house and outdoors with no problems. Bella needs no help to get from one room to the other because she knows that path so well.
I think it is time for us to move up into a higher realm. Fixate on the goal of walking in the Spirit. Become more sensitive to the Spirit of God. And when we do, it will be easier for us to keep in step with the Holy Spirit. As we follow Him and live to please God, we will find that walking in the Spirit becomes a habit.
God is calling us higher! He wants us to come up to the spiritual path He has destined for us to walk in our lives. And in that realm, we will experience love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, kindness, faith, and self-control. These are the fruit the Holy Spirit produces! Quite the contrast to what our flesh produces. The Spirit always produces life!
So resolve in your heart today to make the path of the Holy Spirit the place where you live, work and function. Don’t let it be a place you occasionally visit. Make the realm of the Spirit a place where you habitually live your entire life!
